Our CEO shares his thoughts on simplifying surface preparation in manufacturing
I was talking to a production engineer at a recent composites networking event about the manufacturing challenges that he faces, and an issue he brought up was the processing complexity that is caused by having to combine different methods of surface treatment to prepare materials for processes like coating and bonding. These treatments can range from hand sanding CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) through to acid etching of aluminium and plasma treatment of semi-crystalline thermoplastics.
Each type of treatment introduces its own set of challenges to the production line – significant investment in manual labour, slow processes and bottlenecks and high levels of capital investment often combined with time constraints on onward use.
What he really emphasised was that managing these various processes and working within each of their limits can be a real headache. However the options for effective surface preparation are limited, so it is often necessary to use a variety of these processes in manufacturing.
